New Year’s Traditions

Tuesday, January 3rd, 2012

Happy New Year!!  I can not believe 2012 is already here.  It seems like just yesterday we were worried about the 2000 Y2K bug. Goodness do you remember that?  I think I still have jugs of water stored in my basement.

Thankfully nothing like that is looming over us for 2012.  I always enjoy celebrating the New Year because after Christmas everything is kind of dragging after all the excitement of gift giving so the New Year Celebration is a welcome event.  Do you have any traditions that you follow every year?  In my family we have stuck to the same ole traditions for years.  On New Year’s Eve the kids and I stay up playing games or watching movies and eating junk until way after midnight.  Then the next day we spend the day watching parades, enjoying football, and eating our typical New Year’s Day meal.  We have always had some type of meat with collard greens and black eyed peas.  My grandparents taught me to eat lots of greens and peas on the first day of the year to bring good luck and lots of money for the coming year (greens for dollar bills, and brown peas for pennies.) This has been our menu ever since I can remember!

What are the tried and true traditions that your family honors for New Years Day?  I would love to hear them.

Happy New Year’s Eve!

1111-43513 Family is Love

Happy New Year’s Eve! I hope you are busy prepping your festivities for the evening! I usually don’t have extravagant plans to ring in the New Year, and this year is the same. I will be making a big roaster full of pork and sauerkraut and watching the ball drop on the television in my living room. Can’t hold this party animal back! Haha!

My family usually brings out the board games, the sparkling grape juice, and the laughs. We spend the evening enjoying each other’s company and trying to beat one another in one of the new games my kids got for Christmas, stopping only to countdown and welcome the brand New Year! It is a blast!

Barbara Lloyd couldn’t have summed it up any better with this new sampler. Family definitely is LOVE.

If you are heading out this evening, have a safe and enjoyable New Year! Welcome, 2012! How do you ring in the New Year?

Happy New Year!

Happy Birthday, Brother!

Wednesday, December 21st, 2011

Annie and BrothersHi there!

Today is my brother Neil’s 29th birthday. He’s the one in the middle, between me and our brother Jon. I am very much looking forward to him joining me on this side of 30 next year.

Can you tell we like to have fun together? Jon’s my travel buddy, but Neil is my UFC fight night, my pizza and wing night, and of course, the dad to my #1 favorite nephew. I don’t think anybody pushes my buttons faster than him, and he’s had 29 years to perfect that. He makes fun of my driving, makes fun of me in the car, and pretty much makes fun of me whenever he can. But, at least I can pronounce “Burger King”, “Valentine’s Day” and “envelope” correctly. He can’t. Don’t you just love sibling rivalry? But honestly, I love both of my brothers with my whole heart! They are my best friends forever.

Before I end this post, I will tell a funny story about my brother. When we were all little, Neil was the only one with blonde hair and brown eyes. Both Jon and I have dark hair and blue / green eyes. Jon and I are also “bigger” than Neil – he was always a bean pole! Thankfully he’s thickened up over 29 years. We used to tease him nonstop and tell him he was adopted. One night at dinner, he wouldn’t eat something that the rest of us love, and of course, in true brother – sister fashion, Jon and I had to remind him that he was adopted. He got angry and yelled, “No I am not! I found my birth certificate!!! I am not adopted!” Poor guy felt so bad about our constant teasing that he went through my mom’s dresser and found his birth certificate! I think I felt really bad for about 2.5 seconds, and haven’t looked back. Poor kid! Looking back at pictures of us and of our parents, I’m now 100% sure that he is related to me. I guess I’ll claim him.

Join me in wishing Neil a very Happy Birthday! I love you! Enjoy the year, brother. Once you hit 30, there’s no looking back! But don’t worry… I’ll be reminding you of that for the next 12 months. I wouldn’t want you to forget about it!

Beautiful Tea Time Baby Shower

Tea Time Baby Shower

I know lately I have driven everyone crazy by constantly showing them my first grandbaby’s pictures. He is just so darn cute that I can’t help but show him off. Well… guess what? My second grandbaby is due in 9 weeks. Coworkers will be running from me for sure now!

This past Saturday, I went to a baby shower for my second grandson, Brady. We had so much fun! It was held at a tea house, and we had our own personal tea party. We had the most delicious scones and tea I have ever tasted. I never thought hot tea could be so good!

Luckily for Momma, she received tons of clothes for her new little man, and I’m sure he will be adorable in all his cute outfits. I can’t wait to show everyone HIS pictures, too!

Happy Birthday to Caleb!

Saturday, December 17th, 2011

Happy Birthday, Caleb! On Thursday, my son Caleb turned the Big 13! Watching him grow up, learning how to make good decisions, and taking on greater responsibilities has made this mommy so proud. His fun loving way of life is infections to everyone around him. I wasn’t bothered as much when my other kids turned 13, but for some reason, I can’t shake the overwhelming feeling of sadness. Caleb is my baby, and in my mind, he should not be allowed to grow up. Wishful thinking…

Happy Birthday to my NEW TEENAGER! I look at him every day and realize how blessed I am.

Have a great weekend!

Baking with Grandma

Magical Pumpkin Roll!Hi there, and Happy Friday!

If there is one thing I love about the holidays, it’s food. Yeah, it’s nice to hang out with family, but come on… There are some foods that you just wait for all year! My Grandma’s pumpkin roll is one of them. We only have it on Thanksgiving or Christmas, and we all love it. My cousin Katie and my brother have been known to violently fight over the last piece. Last year, she decided she was done making it. Slowly but surely, she’s trying to pass all of the baking to me. She bought me a pizzelle iron, and now this. Last weekend, she decided to give me, my mom, two of my aunts, and my cousin lessons in the art of pumpkin roll. It’s all from scratch, and made with love. We ended up making four rolls! Absolutely delicious!

I know how that the tradition will be kept alive in our family, and that’s the best lesson of all!

Now, on to make the pizzelles….

Have a great weekend!

Christmas Traditions

Thursday, December 15th, 2011

Where has this year gone? Only 11 days before Christmas. Seems as we get older, time goes faster. This time of the year is very special to me. I love watching my two daughters get so excited anticipating Santa’s arrival. Each year, just after Thanksgiving, Santa send two helper elves (Elf on the Shelf) to our house to report back to him on how well our girls are behaving. Each night, they leave and come back in the morning to a new spot in the house. Every morning the girls get up excited to find where their “elf” is sitting when he returned from reporting to Santa at the North Pole. Having the elves around really helps to get them up and moving to get ready for school. Someone needs to invent an “Elf on the Shelf” for the rest of the year!

Have a great weekend,
Kelli

Catching Christmas Spirit!

Monday, December 12th, 2011

Hopped up on Christmas!Hi there, and Happy Monday!

I can’t believe we have less than 2 weeks until Christmas! I plan on spending my week wrapping, baking, shipping, and shopping. My nephew has been getting into the spirit of things, too. When my brother lived in Wooster, my mom and I decorated his apartment for Christmas while he was at work one day. He made the mistake of giving me a key! My nephew found the tiny tree we had set up for my brother, and it’s now his new best friend. He wants to sit by it every day, wants the lights on constantly, and carries ornaments around all day long. Don’t worry, there isn’t any coffee in that cup! He just likes to pretend so once my sister in law and I are done with our drinks, we rinse out the cups and he has a good time with them.

With his “coffee” in one hand and his ornaments in the other, he seems to be all set for Christmas! He was “helping” his babysitter wrap some gifts and set them under their tree. After a minute, she realized he hadn’t come back from putting a gift under the tree. She found him with unwrapped gifts, trying to get toys out of the packaging. Yep, I’d say he’s definitely ready!

Are you ready for Christmas?

Have a great week!

My Favorite Christmas Movies

Tuesday, December 6th, 2011

I love Christmas for many reasons. I love how my house looks and smells right after I decorate. I love being in the crazy mass of humanity on Black Friday fighting for all the great deals. I love baking Christmas cookies and breakfast on Christmas morning. I love watching my children open their gifts… and I love watching them give gifts to others. I love the real meaning of Christmas… and sharing that with my family. There is so much to love about this season!

One of my most favorite things to do is watch all the great Christmas movies with my family. There are so many and new ones every year. I’ve listed 10 of the top movies of this season below:
